"Self-Identity" (2011)

Right channel is English, left channel is Cantonese
I did my self-portrait on identity because that has always been an important question in my life. I seem to find myself think that I'm this and this, but not this or this and don't really fit into that. My recording is of me talking about my background and schooling in English and in Cantonese (Hong Kong's two official languages). The recording kind of reminds me of when I was younger, when VCDs (video cds) only had left and right audio track. It would automatically play both having movies/cartoons be bilingual, until it was finally switched on the DVD player.
My object was a universal adapter, which I chose because i've used it a lot in my life. I felt that it was kind of metaphorical for me, to be from one and then adapt into another. The object is attached to a potentiometer connected to the Arduino that controls a Processing file. When the universal adapter is turned, it changes the clarity of the audio. The audience can attempt to "tune" me either in or out, but is never able to tune to one side only.
