shots is proud to announce its annual competition for young photographers and call for entries.

This is a unique opportunity for some invaluable international exposure. Each year, shots publishes a substantial Directory – a major resource for global brands and the creative industries that serve them. It is bought, and used all year by top creative directors and art buyers.

This year’s competition is open brief and we are calling for entries in the form of a short series of between 3-10 images. It is free to enter and there will be a £500 prize for the overall winner as well as publication within the book.

A selection of finalists will be chosen from entries; and from those, five overall winners will be announced in November 2011. All finalists will be given space in the Directory to present their work along with contact details and the winning entry will feature on the cover. Runners-up will be given additional full-page exposure throughout the book on dividers when the Directory is published in December 2011.

The competition is open to all and the closing date for entries is Sunday 31 July 2011. Submissions will be judged by a professional team from the advertising and photography community.

Images may be colour or black and white and the shortlisted entrants will be asked after the submission deadline to submit high-res versions, on which final judging will be based.

Files should be low-res and then set a maximum file size (recommended >300kb per image).

All images should be submitted digitally to shotsyoungphotographers@gmail.com and not to this inbox as this address is for correspondence only.

Please note that only unpublished work will be considered.

Good luck and we look forward to seeing viewing your entries.

Best regards,

Ryan Watson

An opportunity to present your talent and partake in the production of a Documentary Film, showcasing the work and hustle of emerging Canadian Designers and what it takes to rise to the top

1.  About the Organization

Art of Fashion Inc. is an award winning not-for-profit establishment which has embraced the Canadian apparel and accessories’ designers and devoted to nourishing their work and success through creating networking opportunities.

Every year, AOF hosts a grand show/exhibit which gives opportunity to 10 emerging Canadian Designers to enter their work and compete against each other for a grand prize of $40,000. The ultimate award is comprised of a monetary grant, exclusive retail and media opportunities, and a membership to many arts and design committees.

With the show driving a crowd of more than 20,000 people each year and a select panel of guest judges, Art of Fashion is sure to create an endless list of opportunities not only for its competitors but for those who partake in the event’s and film’s production.

2.  The Project

The main aim of the film is to present the efforts of the organization to promote the true colors of Canadian talent and throw some light into the true struggle of finding good funding. This year, the documentary will give the audience a glimpse of last year’s fierce competition, wittily called “La Belle Epoque 2010”, and intertwine it with the current competing designers – a formula based on previous triumphs and new obstacles.

3.  The Opportunity

The documentary will focus on creating a catching script, exposing the cause created by the organization and highlighting each designer’s work.

-   Calling out to all directors, script-writers, directors of photography and sound to apply for the chance to contribute their most creative and original ideas towards the making of a successful documentary film. Your work and name will be credited and exposure will be given to you: an excellent opportunity to boost up that portfolio!

-   Upon completion of the project, the participating crew will have the opportunity to invite family and friends to view the final cut during a private screening prior to the Art of Fashion event. In addition, the screening will be exclusively open to established Canadian designers and the media.

-   The work will be showcased throughout the night of Art of Fashion’s event, while being viewed by more than 20,000 people; it will further be included in the roaming Art installation at a minimum of 5 locations across the country.

-   Upon its successful completion, the production team will have the chance and try to enter the film into the Toronto Hot Docs Film Festival and TIFF.

4.  Main Objectives [of Documentary]

-   To act as a marketing tool of Art of Fashion as an organization and its competition

-   To promote the participating designers in the night of the event and to further help elevate their careers by giving exposure and awareness to their brand

-   To show the presence of the immense Canadian talent around us

-   To generate an understanding of the lack of funds for designers

-   To promote the organization’s efforts to fight for Canadian designers and their exposure

5.  Production Team Opportunities

By applying to participate in this project, individuals will have the chance to use their creativity in all aspects of the film production industry, offer their talents towards the successful execution of the project and gain exposure on the night of the screening and event, as well as jump-start their career by participating in a project with a cause.

Internship hours/positions will be given to Film Students who apply to be a part of this project.

Furthermore, the documentary will be used as a promotional tool throughout the following year through the use of Social Media and other Fashion-related platforms, as well as National Film Festivals.

I am writing to you today with an opportunity for Ryerson University students to be involved in a unique and exciting fundraising event called Minor Hockey Fights Cancer “Feel Like A Pro Day”. Mark Mannarn, a twelve year old boy from Toronto is teaming up with NHL star PAUL COFFEY to run this event on June 18th, 2011.

For someone so young, Mark has faced a lot of adversity.  Tragically, last December Mark’s grandmother passed away from pancreatic cancer. Earlier that fall his mother was also diagnosed with the disease. She continues to fight her battle against breast cancer today.

In September, Mark attended an event called ‘We Day’. This organization celebrates the power of youth generating positive change in the world. Instead of being discouraged by the challenges he was facing, this remarkable young boy came up with an idea to make a difference.  Mark decided to create Minor Hockey Fights Cancer ‘Feel Like A Pro Day’ which invites other young hockey fans to raise money and awareness for cancer research and support on behalf of the Canadian Cancer Society.

On June 18th NHL Hall of Fame members, Paul Coffey and Dale Hawerchuk, among other NHL pros, will run ‘pro-like’ drills for the participants. The 30 kids who raise the most money will play in a game against the pros.

What we need:

- Photographers

  • o Student Photographers to donate their time on June 18th between the hours of 8:30 am – 1:30 pm and photograph the players and the pros in an arena
  • o Number required (4)
  • o Must have their own equipment
  • o Lunch is provided

- Graphic Designer

  • o As Soon As Possible
  • o Assist with design of our Programme for event

If you could post this information on a blog or bulletin or give me contact information for students you feel would be interested please let me know.  It would be a great way to supplement a portfolio and help out a great cause.

If you have any questions, would like further information about the event or are have contact information for me please do not hesitate to contact me at kaitlyn.drury@cibc.ca or 519-580-8443.  You can also visit our website www.minorhockeyfightscancer.ca.  All of this contact information can be posted on the blog/bulletin as well.

Thank you so much for your consideration, I will be following up with you shortly.

Raising the Lusitania: How to Render the Invisible

  • May 25, 7 pm
  • Oakham Lounge, 55 Gould St.

The panelists for Raising the Lusitania discuss the subtleties and importance of impulses to document in images that which is inherently not visual. Paula John’s autobiographical work seeks to embody, through a chromatic variety of visual media, the multivalent trauma of mental illness, and the unseen internal processes of breakdown and subsequent healing through creative production. With Chris Manson’s work we move from mental to physical illness, in his documentary photo-essay about the lifestyle changes required of Canadian adolescents living with type-1 diabetes. Moving away from the personal, the photographic works of Garett Walker an Dafydd Hughes attempt to document hidden organizational processes of geographic and digital spaces. Walker’s work explores how memory and imagination work to create meaning in photographs of unmarked landmarks. Hughes’ digital exegesis of Robert Frank’s The Americans examines the degrees to which technology intervenes in our interpretation and organization of the ever-increasing amount of information we contend with daily. Join these artists in an engaging conversation about projects that don’t aim simply to document the world but to find visual representations for the often hidden forces that shape it.

Testaments

  • June 14, 6:30 pm
  • Oakham Lounge, 55 Gould St.
  • Panelists: Scott Humphries, Daniel Froidevaux
  • Moderated by Marc Glassman, Editor of POV Magazine and Montage Magazine, Director of This is Not A Reading Series (TINARS) and Pages beyond Bricks and Mortar, and film critic for Classical 96.3 FM.

The act of remembering is always a political gesture that points to the present and future. From the formal practice of history to the collection of family photo albums, the impulse to remember and to document serves political aims. When mining the archives of family history, documentarians look for distinct points of access that connect the personal to broader discussions on subjectivity and identity, politics and economics. Daniel Froidevaux’s Little Castle and Scott Humphries’ Humphries Road tackle larger themes: the illusory quality of identity, the shared subjectivity of memory, and the intersection of familial inheritance with broader economic and political trends. While Froidevaux’s work addresses issues of identity, displacement and memory through the story of his great aunt’s expulsion from Nazi Germany, Humphries documents the issues surrounding family farm succession and the future of agriculture in Ontario. These individual accounts hint at the relevance of micro-history as a means of reexamining the past and re-imagining the future.

Divinely Inspired

  • June 14, 8:00 pm
  • Oakham Lounge, 55 Gould St.

How do we represent faith and spirituality, and the many ways in which they manifest and are consumed? From a personal lens, recent travels and moments of memory, Ben Lenzner explores modern perceptions of death and the afterlife. Layal AI-Haidari’s experiential documentary celebrates life by engulfing our senses in a transcendental mosaic of electronic music and dance. Joel Elliott, through myth and history, takes us on a pilgrimage to a place that has been both holy and a witness to horrific destruction. Where does faith exist and how do we find it? What are the problems filmmakers face when dealing with the divine, and how do they place themselves within the experience? This panel will dive into the deepest pits of human experience while trying to connect it to a larger philosophy and theoretical engagement that can speak both to documentary practice and spirituality.

A Very Wide Threshold: Bridges to Communication, Paths of Healing

  • June 15, 6:30 pm
  • Oakham Lounge, 55 Gould St.
  • Panelists: Maja Zonjic, Jessica Dymond, Julie Pasila, Colleen Ayoup
  • Moderated by Alice Maurice, Assistant Professor of English at the University of Toronto and Associate Producer of Defending our Lives (1994), winner of the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short

Each of the projects represented in A Very Wide Threshold aims to lay bare the broken-down lines of communication between marginalized communities and the larger society from which they have been alienated. Maja Zonjic’s Postcards from Utila looks at the ways the tourism industry in Honduras uses idyllic imagery to “frame out” the impoverished barrio, Camponado, located just 500 metres from vacation hotspots. Jessica Dymond’s installation, Skin Deep, aims to create for its viewers an immersive experience of “Beauty Night,” a drop-in event meant to instill a sense of empowerment and self-worth for women in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Julie Paslia’s Art Works offers a contemplative exploration of the regenerative powers of art and performance. Colleen Ayoup’s mixed-media project, Wired to Learn, tackles the complacencies of our high school education system head-on, opening a conversation between both educators and learners about pedagogy and the value of education.
