I.M.A GALLERY

WorkSpace Canada: Photographs by Martin Weinhold

November 2-26, 2011

Opening Reception: Thursday, November 3, 6:00 – 9:00 pm

“The ongoing long-term portrait project WorkSpace Canada explores the world of work in the 21st century. It depicts people in their workplaces in a very personal way, revealing the professional possibilities in contemporary Canada.” -Martin Weinhold

We would like to personally invite each of you to Martin Wiehold’s Workspace Canada exhibition opening at Ryerson’s I·M·A GALLERY on Thursday, November 3, at 6 p.m. Co-sponsored by the I·M·A GALLERY and the Goethe-Institut Toronto, with support from The Faculty of Communication & Design, the exhibition is curated by the I·M·A GALLERY team and Don Snyder. Martin Weinhold is returning to Ryerson University after having been an artist-in-residence and guest lecturer in the Documentary Media program in 2007-08 and 2010-11, and the joint Ryerson and York University Masters program.

Over the past decade German photographer Martin Weinhold has traveled across this vast country to photograph Canadian workers, compiling a record of working conditions, the nature of work and the values associated with all forms of labour. By making intimate portraits of each of his subjects, he focuses on the role of the individual worker and how each occupation becomes essential in the structure of our society. While making a series of individual portraits he is simultaneously creating a unique composite portrait of modern Canada. The project casts light upon the meaning of labour and employment in the context of today’s economy.

Martin Weinhold was born in East Germany and studied at the University of the Arts in Berlin. He specializes in portrait photography and has long-term teaching experience at the University of the Arts Berlin and the Design Schule Schwerin, where he started the photography program.

On November 8th, at 6:30 p.m., a panel discussion on the representation of labour will feature Martin Weinhold, Prof. Mark Kingwell of the University of Toronto, and photo-based artists Carole Condé and Karl Beveridge. Moderated by Prof. Blake Fitzpatrick, the event will take place at Ryerson University, 285 Victoria Street, Fifth Floor, Room 501. All events are free and open to the public.

The Wage Slave’s Glossary, written by Joshua Glenn and Mark Kingwell, will be on sale at the panel discussion. Glenn and Kingwell have condensed the language of labour in North American culture into a glossary that articulates the frustrations of being in the labour force today.

An installation of Weinhold’s photographs will also be on view at the Goethe Institut, Toronto, concurrent with the I.M.A. Gallery show and Weinhold’s residency at Ryerson.

For more information please contact me at zinnia.naqvi@ryerson.ca. For more information on Martin Weinhold see http://www.menschenfotograf.de/. For more information on the Goethe Institut see: www.goethe.de/toronto.

We hope to see you there!

Best regards,

Zinnia Naqvi, Media Coordinator, on behalf Director Katy McCormick and the entire I·M·A GALLERY team.

I.M.A Gallery is a non-profit student and faculty-run gallery, providing an exhibition venue for contemporary, Canadian and international film, new media and photography artists. The gallery is supported by the Project-Funds Allocation Committee for Students (PFACS), Ryerson University’s School of Image Arts and generous donations from community and individual partners.

Standard ticket price applies.

I am organizing a professional conference in Toronto for May 7, 2012, and have been asked to explore the possibility of having our proceedings recorded, and made into digital files to be posted to our Association’s web page. I wanted to explore the possibility of having film students undertake the work to provide them with real-world experience, while keeping our costs (reasonably) low.

Please contact me if interested.

MicroFilms, a relatively new production company based right here in

Toronto is looking to hire 4th year Ryerson students!  We are shooting

a few shorts over the next year or so.  It is not a paid job, but could

be used for a film CO-OP credit.  You get on-set experience, and these

shorts will be taken to festivals across North America.  Should we get

funding for a feature, we would be able to pay all members of the crew.

For more info on our company, visit www.microfilms.ca.

Here is a rough list of what we will need in the way of student help:

- Gaffer/Grip assistant to work with Key who must have lots of

experience

- Art Department – storyboard and set graphics experience and skills

crucial

- Key Set Decorator and assistant

- Key Props and assistant

- On set special effects and must be experienced!! (rain in opening

scene andother film noir possibilities)

- 2nd and 3rd AD’s

- Continuity person (experience important)

- Assistant sound person Transport (there are vehicles in this story

that must be managed. This could be a secondary responsibility for the

assistant in sets/props)

These jobs are all important and experience is crucial. They don’t all

have to be 4th years but they all do have to know the jobs and be

experienced enough to do a good job. The keys in some of the

departments are very experienced and I will be overlooking all the departments.

Microfilms.ca is shooting the short film, “DEAD MONDAY” towards the end

of November and is looking for the positions listed above to be filled

by experienced students.  Interested people should contact:

Tony Duggan-Smith at: tonyds@pathcom.com

This is an intern situation, with departments having moderate budgets

for materials and there will be the occasional feeding of crew! Check

us out online as microfilms.ca and individually as, Mark Korven and

Tony Duggan-Smith. We look forward to talking with you and guarantee

some creative and worth-while experience that will serve you well in

your careers!

I hope all is well!
