“Gilded Wings” Call for Proposals | @Spore_Contemp 2018 group exhibition | June 1

Spore Contemporary Art Centre is seeking artists for possible inclusion in the 2018 group exhibition Gilded WingsGilded Wings seeks to explore notions of memory, identity, and place.  Please see an explanation of the exhibition’s title, main ideas of interest, and submission guidelines below.

Exhibition Title and Main Ideas

The exhibition’s title is inspired by the following anecdotal event:

Two persons listen to a folk song in the living room of a Toronto household.  One translates the song to the other.  They are first and second generation Canadians.

This anecdote generates the ideas of memory, identity, and place.  Folk songs recount events of importance to local peoples and become part of a nation’s identity, anecdotes are memories re-told through narrative.  When translating a song the events and identities of another place/geography are described.  A translator conflates identities and geographies, by re-telling an event in a different language and nation.

This call for proposals is open to all media.  Works-of-art may relate to any one, or all three, of the main ideas (memory, identity, and place).

Artists must include the following in a single PDF.

  • Artist statement and CV
  • No more than 5 images of previous work
  • Optional: link to website
