CFE Film Series 2017/2018/2019

In partnership with the Centre for Free Expression (CFE), the Documentary Media Research Centre (DMRC) launched an ongoing monthly film series at Ryerson University on October 19, 2017. The film series features both documentary and fiction films on the theme of repression, dissent, and free expression. The films are introduced by specialists and followed by a discussion with the audience.

Citizenfour

January 8th, 2019

The Centre for Free Expression, in partnership with the Documentary Media Research Centre, showed the American film Citizenfour, directed by Laura Poitras, on Tuesday, January 8th at 7 pm. The film was introduced by Blake Fitzpatrick.

Mapantsula

December 11, 2018

The CFE, in partnership with the DMRC, screened the South African film Mapantsula, directed by Oliver Schmitz. The screening was on Tuesday, December 11th at 7pm as part of the 2018/2019 CFE film series and was introduced by Anver Saloojee, Assistant VP – International, Ryerson University.

The Lives of Others

November 13, 2018

The CFE, in partnership with the DMRC, screened the German film The Lives of Others on Tuesday, November 13th at 7pm, as part of the 2018/2019 CFE film series. The film was directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, and the screening was introduced by Martin Weinhold, Visiting Artist, Ryerson’s School of Image Arts.

Harlan County U.S.A

October 16, 2018

The Centre for Free Expression, in partnership with the Documentary Media Research Centre, screened the American film Harlan County U.S.A, directed by Barbara Kopple, as the first film in the 2018/2019 CFE film series on Tuesday, October 16th at 7pm. The screening was introduced by James L. Turk, Director, Centre for Free Expression.

Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer

On Tuesday, May 15th at 7pm The CFE, in partnership with the DMRC, screened the final film in the 2017/2018 CFE film series, the Russian film Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer, directed by Mike Lerner and Maxim Pozdorovkin. The screening was introduced by Alexandra Orlova, Associate Professor of Criminology, Ryerson University.

Romero

April 10, 2018

On Tuesday, April 10th at 7pm The CFE, in partnership with the Documentary Media Research Centre, screened the American film Romero, directed by John Duigan as part of the 2017/2018 CFE film series. The screening was introduced by Alexandra Anderson, Associate Professor, School of Image Arts, Ryerson University

Long Night’s Journey into Day
