Women in View – SexMoneyMedia 2013  TIFF Bell lightbox.

Women are tipping the balance at the box office in both Canada and the US according to recent stats, finally displacing teen boys. So will we see a revolution in content and content creators? Our ever-expanding media landscape should offer the possibility of increased diversity on screen. It makes sense for “product” to reflect the increasingly diversified global audience, yet what’s on offer seems to be more of the same, by the same.

Join us for a lively discussion with a distinguished panel of media leaders. Panelists include Globe and Mail television critic John Doyle; ACTRA National President Ferne Downey; Head of Sundance Productions Laura Michalchyshyn, and Dr. Stacy Smith, USC Annenberg School of Communications and Journalism; Head Researcher, Geena Davis Institute on Gender and Media. The discussion will be moderated by Rina Fraticelli, Executive Director of Women in View.

Wednesday, April 24th. Director Baz Luhrmann will be in studio @ Strombo, as are Billy Talent’s Ian D’Sa, Sum 41’s Cone McCaslin, and comic Heidi Foss.

Wednesday, April 24th: It’s a two-interview day! First, George chats with Oscar-nominated Australian director Baz Luhrmann! Best known for Moulin Rouge, Strictly Ballroom and Romeo and Juliet, Luhrmann also acts as an Ambassador for Australians in Film, helping to further the careers of Australians working in Entertainment. His latest film The Great Gatsby, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan, is out May 10th. Watch the trailer here: http://thegreatgatsby.warnerbros.com/

…then, we’re pulling out the red couch today for Billy Talent’s Ian D’Sa and Sum 41’s Cone McCaslin! Each of them is a huge star on his own, but they’ve banded together to produce the winning song in the Song for Change National Talent Search contest to benefit the Make Music Matter non-profit organization. This is a terrific example of how music can be used to make positive change – Make Music Matter will use the song to help youth from impoverished communities! Read more about the project at www.MySongForChange.com

…our panel today features ‘fantastically intelligent’ comic Heidi Foss! A three-time Canadian Comedy Award nominee, she’s a theatre alumnus, a sharp observer of the everyday, and she’s blended this with her deadpan style to become what the UK’s The Independent calls ‘a revelation’! She’s been part of the writing team for This Hour Has 22 Minutes and is now developing her own sitcom. Check her out at www.heidifoss.com

Audience arrival time is 3:15pm in the CBC lobby at 25 John St. To reserve seats, just email me here at georgetickets@cbc.ca. Audience members should be 18 or older.

She has worked with some extensive photographic collections including those at the George Eastman House in Rochester, New York; the World Cultures department at the Royal Canadian Museum; and the Mira Goddard Collection at the Ryerson Image Centre. 1pm Lecture: Joan M. Schwartz, PhD, Queen’s University.

“To Inform, to Illustrate, and to Instruct: Photographs in Books in pre-Confederation Canada.”

Dr. Schwartz will be speaking about William Notman’s three books of photographic art reproductions, Photographic Selections. Notman’s photographic reproductions made the civilized art world a more accessible place, giving viewers in pre-Confederation Canada greater visual access to works of art held in private Montreal collections or not immediately available in public institutions outside Europe. This talk will examine the nature, production, circulation, and significance of Notman’s Photographic Selections and other photographically illustrated publications in nineteenth-century Canada, including Samuel McLaughlin’s The photographic portfolio, a monthly view of Canadian scenes and scenery, H.B.Small’s Canadian Handbook and Tourist Guide (1866, 1867), Octavius Thompson’s Toronto in the Camera (1868), George Beers’ Lacrosse, Our National Game (1869), and Henry Vennor’s Our Birds of Prey (1874).
